יהוה (YHWH) is the four-letter Hebrew name of God, known as the Tetragrammaton, meaning “four letters.” It is the most sacred name in the Jewish and Christian traditions. When Moses asked God for His name at the burning bush, God answered: “I AM WHO I AM” (Ehyeh asher Ehyeh), and instructed Moses to tell Israel: “YHWH, the God of your fathers, has sent me to you. This is my name forever” (Exodus 3:14-15).

The Simple Version

The name reveals something about the nature of God that no other name captures. YHWH is not a title (“Lord,” “King,” “Creator”) but a statement of being. God’s name is His existence itself: uncaused, self-sustaining, eternal. Everything else that exists derives its being from YHWH. He does not need a reason to exist. He is the reason anything exists.

The name was considered so holy that ancient Jewish scribes would not pronounce it aloud, substituting Adonai (“Lord”) when reading Scripture. This reverence reflects a core insight: you do not use the name of the ground of all being casually. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10) takes on deeper meaning when you understand that “the Lord” here is YHWH, the self-existent I AM.

Why It Matters

In the AI age, we are surrounded by things that derive their power from other things: models trained on data, tools built on frameworks, businesses built on platforms. Everything is dependent on something else. YHWH is the one reality that is not derived from anything. He is the uncaused cause, the foundation beneath every foundation.

It is the most practical orientation available: if you build on something that depends on something else, your work is only as stable as the chain beneath it. If you build in alignment with YHWH, the self-existent ground of reality, you build on the only foundation that cannot be disrupted.

Technology amplifies intention, and intention rightly ordered toward יהוה is the most important thing you bring to the work.
