Fine-Tuning
The process of taking a pre-trained AI model and training it further on specific data to make it better at a particular task.
What It Is
Fine-tuning is like hiring a generalist and then giving them specialized on-the-job training. A large language model starts with broad knowledge from its original training. Fine-tuning takes that model and trains it further on a smaller, focused dataset so it performs better at a specific task or adopts a particular style. For example, you could fine-tune a model on thousands of customer support transcripts so it responds in your company’s voice and knows your product details without being prompted every time.
Why It Matters
Most operators will never need to fine-tune a model themselves, but understanding the concept helps you evaluate tools and services that claim to use “custom AI.” Fine-tuning is expensive and time-consuming compared to simpler approaches like prompt engineering or retrieval-augmented generation. Knowing the difference helps you avoid overpaying for solutions that use a sledgehammer where a screwdriver would work. It also helps you recognize when fine-tuning genuinely is the right approach, such as when you need consistent style or specialized domain knowledge baked into the model.
In Practice
A company with thousands of past sales emails might fine-tune a model to write new emails in the same tone. Most operators, however, get better results faster by writing strong system prompts or using RAG to feed relevant documents into a general-purpose model at query time. Fine-tuning is a last resort, not a first step.
